Nearly Half Of Large Vans Are Failing Their MOTs

New research has revealed that nearly half of all large vans and around a third of LCVs are failing their MOT tests…

Large Vans Failing MOTs

Research, conducted by Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles, has revealed that a significant number of commercial vehicles are failing their MOTs. Nearly half of large vans (45%), weighing between 3 – 3.5 tonnes, fail their MOTs each year. In addition, just shy of a third of light commercial vehicles (LCVs) fail theirs. Given that the average cost of repairing a vehicle so that it can pass the test is £143, van drivers are accruing a collective bill of £193 million.

Data compiled by the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA)  has shed light on the most common causes of test failures. These include unsafe suspension systems, faulty brakes and damaged lights. The organisation’s MOT Compliance Survey (2019-2020) also revealed that 13.58% of vehicles that were passed shouldn’t have been; possessing a serious fault. However, it also found that 3.23% of failed tests should have been passes.

Unwanted Downtime

James Allitt, head of aftersales at Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles, commented on the research. He said, “the figures reveal many vans are failing the MOT with simple maintenance issues that would be picked up by regular servicing, and it’s leaving van drivers risking unwanted downtime and an unexpected repair bill to get back on the road”.

Fleets have a responsibility to provide duty of care to both their drivers and members of the public. This means ensuring vehicles are safe and well-maintained. In addition, keeping on top of servicing can prevent vehicle downtime and save money, too; regardless of the type of vehicle being used.
